H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccines at no cost through BSSP Anthem Plans

BSSP is committed to being a partner in your family’s wellness. For the 2009-10 flu season, BSSP will waive your deductible, co-pay and co-insurance payment for administration of the H1N1 vaccine by network medical providers.

Network medical providers are encouraged not to bill any office visit associated with the administration of the H1N1 vaccine.  This waiver of deductible, co-pay and co-insurance does not apply to any office visit your medical provider may charge.

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recommended that the following groups receive the H1N1 vaccine:

  • Pregnant women – because they are at higher risk of complications and can potentially provide protection to infants who cannot be vaccinated

  • Those in contact with or providing care for children younger than six months of age – because younger infants are at higher risk of complications and cannot be vaccinated; vaccination of those in close contact with infants might protect infants by insulating them from the virus

  • Health care and emergency medical services personnel with direct patient contact – because they present a potential source of infection for vulnerable patients; also, increased absenteeism in this population could reduce health care system capacity

  • Children from six months through four years of age

  • Children 5 through 18 years of age who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza, such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, neurocognitive or neuromuscular disorders, or a suppressed immune system

Contact your network medical provider to determine if you should be vaccinated against H1N1.

More information regarding H1N1 may be found at www.flu.gov, www.anthem.com/ca or http://www.bcoe.org/home/SwineFlu/default.htm.
